Weekend recap

This was one of the busier weekends I've had in a while.

First of all, my apartment is a huge mess.  My friend Clint came over last week (he now lives in Seattle but we were roommates a couple of years ago... and he is currently on a two week visit to Arizona).  He still had stuff here and needed to go through it.  That's all done but I haven't had a chance to clean up afterward.  I've had a full schedule.

I had my usual live broadcast at Monsoon at Desert Diamond Casino on Friday night and then Saturday I was in the Ladies Council fashion show benefitting Tu Nidito.  I wasn't a fashion model (that would be comedy all by itself) but was a 'celebrity' runway walker with the kids from Tu Nudito.  This is the second year I've been in the show.  Going to the fashion show is an experience all by itself.  Mostly it reminded me that I'm poor.  There were packages being auctioned off that were getting 5000 dollar plus bids.  If I had that kind of money I'd buy some new socks.

I had to jam over to Casino Del Sol to host Cosmic Bingo since Lucinda Holliday was in New Orleans and I fill in when she's out of town.  It was an odd night because it had some of the lightest attendance I'd seen in a long time, there was no manager on duty so the normal extra prizes were smaller than usual, they had sound system issues before we started, and it was just odd.  I got through it but it was a strange night.

Sunday night I went to a choral concert at University of Arizona with Anthony.  We went because a friend of ours was in a part of it.  The show was not my cup o' tea.  I felt like a five year old fidgeting in my seat for more than 90 minutes and I didn't recognize any of the music.  The surprise to me was the little auditorium we were in was packed.  I was disappointed they didn't have a snack bar where I could get a hot dog or soda but I did my best to enjoy the performance since I know the performers all worked hard on their show.

I blogged the photos from some of the weekend and you can see them in the blog posts before this one.  KENjoy!

Kenparazzi: Monsoon Nightclub

My weekly live broadcasts at Monsoon Nightclub inside Desert Diamond Casino Hotel in Tucson gives me the chance to see all kinds of people including those I've become acquainted with on Facebook and Twitter and some friends I occasionally see.

Of course that requires a Kenparazzi photo moment!

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer a popular Halloween costume choice?

I saw a piece today on KGUN 9 TV that suggested that a popular costume this Halloween will be Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.

The Governor has gained national attention due to her stand on SB1070 and the horrible performance she had at the one debate she was forced to participate in a few weeks ago where she froze.  She was forced to participate because she had to in order to receive state campaign funds.

Halloween costumes are often done to parody something or someone.  It is fitting in Jan Brewer's case.

Unfortunately it appears she's going to win the campaign.  However, both of the leading candidates are pretty awful choices.  Democrat Terry Goddard is like a high school history teacher.  He's so geeky its tough to like him regardless of what he stands for.  Governor Brewer is a horrible public speaker and got the job she has now because former Governor Janet Napalitano left office to become Secretary of Homeland Security for President Obama.  Brewer was formerly Secretary of State.  If I had to break that title down it sounds like she used to take dictation, answer phones, and get coffee for the state.

If we're surrounded by numerous Governor Brewers this Halloween it'll be the scariest one ever!

I helped to apprehend a hit and run driver!

Today has been an odd day.

The normal route I take to the radio station is having a bit of construction.  I got caught in a little delay and made it on time but it was a nail biter for a bit.  It was odd because normally my route has few issues except the occasional day when I'm stuck behind someone driving the ridiculous new speed limit of 30 mph on River Road.  On a side note, whoever decided that road needed to go to a 30 mph speed limit needs to get their butt kicked.

I logged on to Twitter when I got into the radio studio and discovered I'm part of a small group that is getting the new Twitter preview.  It was kind of sluggish but the features are nice.  However, the odd part is that the station's computer browser wouldn't read the new Twitter format.  So, I ended up viewing it using my laptop.  Odd!

Another odd thing that occured is we had the usual Mega Movie CW Tucson television shoot and Producer Thomas was training someone to do it for next week since he'll be on vacation in Canada (who goes to Canada from Arizona?) and one of the flat screens behind me in the studio went to screen saver.  It normally shows the Mega Movie logo during the shoot.  He didn't catch it and almost all of the shoot had to be redone because I did it in front of a screen that had the screen saver going with the Microsoft Windows logo bouncing around.  Redoing an entire shoot is kind of like repeating yourself over and over.  It was odd!

Next on the list of today's oddities:  My buddy Clint flew into Tucson today for a two week visit.  He lives in Seattle and he's the most random person I know.  He hasn't been to Tucson since he moved there more than two years ago.  He called to let me know he landed safely and his friend David picked him up from the airport at about 3 p.m.  Then, he called from random people's cell phones (apparently because he forgot to charge his own phone before he left) every couple of hours with random complaints including how hot it is here, how unhappy he was that he did stuff he shouldn't have, that he was disappointed in himself that he went day drinking, and then started asking me for a ride to the place he's staying at.  He called every hour from 8 until 11 p.m. asking for a ride which I wouldn't give him.  It wasn't unexpected (he's got some addiction issues) but it was odd.

On my way home from the radio station I went to Casino Del Sol to try and make some extra money.  Each week they put $25 in free play on my club card and I use it to try and make some gas money for the week.  Free play is basically free money they give me to gamble with and whatever I win from using it I walk out with when I'm done.  I always walk out with something... sometimes its been a large amount (I won $1,970 once using free play), usually its closer to what they put on the card.  Its always a quick half hour visit but I score some extra dough.  Today I walked out with the smallest amount I ever have:  $11.00.  Not a very lucky day and not much of a reward for driving there but its something.  However, it was odd.

On my way home I was at the stoplight at Valencia and Midvale Park and heard an extremely loud bang behind me.  The car behind me got rear ended!  I couldn't figure out what the heck that noise was until I drove ahead when the light turned green and the car behind me didn't move.  A car sped past me when I drove across the street and by the time I realized that it was a hit and run the car was far ahead of me.  I tried to catch up but got caught at a light and wasn't successful at getting a license plate to help police catch the hit and run driver.  I drove back to let the person who got hit know what I tried to do and the police department and medical crews had arrived to work the accident.  I gave an officer the best description I could of the car and what happened and drove home disappointed that I wasn't a rockstar and more helpful.

About fifteen minutes after I got home my cell phone rang and the officer who I gave my information to was on the phone.  She called to thank me for returning and telling them what I could.  It turns out that the information I gave them was helpful enough to help them catch and apprehend the hit and run driver.  The whole incident was odd but I was excited I was able to help somehow.  It was also amazing that a police officer with the Tucson Police Department called to thank me for helping.  She made what I had considered an odd day have a totally good ending and it was amazing she took time out to do that.

Odd day, happy ending!

Kenparazzi: MDA Telethon 2010 in Tucson

I am a co-host again this year of the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon on KGUN 9 TV.

I'm on two days this year.  In the past its been one.  Its a privelege to help out with MDA's fundraising and work with the talent who work on television every day from KGUN 9.  The Sunday segments I shared with KGUN 9's Guy Atchley, Jennifer Waddell, and Larry Schneble who has been on the MDA telethon in Tucson since the late 1960's.

Some behind the scenes Kenparazzi photos:

I finally met Erica Hersh, who I'm buddies with on Twitter and Facebook!  She volunteers for MDA.

Bums are the world's greatest salespeople

I stopped at a Circle K to put gas in my car on the way home tonight and a stranger approached me asking for money.

Its not an uncommon experience being asked for money at a convenience store.  I have always been fascinated by the fact that convenience stores seem to attract people who are either perceived as homeless (or actually are), neighborhood bums, or beggars.

The guy asking for money looked rough.  He apparently was homeless or did a good job of looking the part.

I dug into my pocket and handed the guy about sixty cents.  The guy thanked me, said God bless, and shuffled across the lot looking for someone else to ask.

It occured to me as I watched him walk off that people who ask for money like that are truly the world's greatest salespeople.  They don't have anything to offer yet they manage to get total strangers to give them money.

Most every other moment in life requires being sold before you give something up, purchase something, or invest your time or money.  Even sex works like that.  There never seems to be an easy way to get anything.  yet, bums don't have anything to offer in exchange for your money and they get money for nothing all the time.  They don't even do a good job of asking most of the time.  Its usually a lame story if they even have one and yet they seem surprisingly successful at getting money from complete strangers.

There may be something to be learned from bums.  One thing I know I need to improve on in my life is learning to ask for things.  Bums have learned to accept rejection and keep trying.  They have an objective yet little if anything to offer.  Yet they still get people like me handing them money for nothing in return.  Major corporations spend ridiculous amounts of money to convince the public to do the same thing.

Something can be said for having a nothing to lose mentality.  A lot of the world's most successful people seem to have that trait.  Learning how to function that way may provide more success in the long run.
